Defining gluten-free

People on gluten-free diets can now rest a little easier knowing there is more labeling of GF products.

Gluten Free StampThe U.S. Food and Drug Administration published a regulation defining what can and cannot be labeled as “gluten-free.”

Here’s what it means for consumers:

  • If an ingredient in a food product is derived from a gluten-containing grain but the gluten has been removed, the food must contain less than 20 parts per million of gluten. Any unavoidable gluten must also be under the 20 parts per million limit.
  • Other terms that must abide by these rules include “no gluten,” “free of gluten,” and “without gluten.”

This isn’t the first time the government has entered this arena. Back in 2004, Congress passed a law requiring the FDA to set standards for “gluten-free” labeling. Hopefully, this labeling will help those who suffer from a gluten allergy or sensitivity to avoid a negative reaction.

All of Mannatech’s products are certified gluten-free and tested by an independent laboratory. You can find a list of all Mannatech products on the website. Take a look!
