Could you be a better boss?

Finding the right level of familiarity can be difficult when you want to keep lines of authority clear. You want to be friends, but you also are the manager. Here are some suggestions for striking the right balance:

Take the time for small talk. It’s important to have more than a greeting at the beginning and end of the day. Asking questions is a great way to get to know your employees, or anyone else for that matter. You can ask simple questions such as ‘how are your kids doing?’ ‘When is your next 5k?’ ‘What’s your dog’s name?’

Are you listening when they discuss what they really want at your insurance agency? Do they wish for more flexible hours? Are they ready to take on more projects? Are they trying to share ideas or improvements for your agency? Are they looking for ways to advance their career or role within the agency and industry?

Not all of their ideas may be realistic, but be sure to listen. If something won’t work, explain to them why not. This doesn’t mean you have to go into specific details you don’t want to share. It simply means to acknowledge and respond.

Are you truly communicating with them? Think of how you are behaving when you communicate with your employees. Is it while glancing at your smartphone? Is it while you are rushing out the door? Keep your attention on the person you are in conversation with.

Do you acknowledge employees’ contributions? This is absolutely key, whether you’re able to provide financial rewards or simply public pronouncements of the employees’ contributions.

Focusing on these suggestions — better communication, listening, appreciation — can build employees’ trust and loyalty as you grow your insurance agency.
