College application essay questions unveiled

Are you planning to apply to college next year using the Common Application? Well, you might as well get a head start on the fabulous, mind-blowing essay that will make admissions officers roll out the red carpet.

The Common Application Board of Directors has announced five new essay prompts for 2013-2014, ditching the vague “topic of your choice” question in favor of more specific instructions.

Without further ado, here are a few of the new essay options. Students may choose one to answer. You’ve got 650 words to sell yourself, by the way, so use them wisely.

“Some students have a background or story that is so central to their identity that they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.”

Does that one get the hamster in your brain running on its wheel? No? How about this next one?

“Recount an incident or time when you experienced failure. How did it affect you, and what lessons did you learn?”

Prefer to stay far, far away from your failures in this vital piece of writing? Maybe this next one will stand out to you.

“Discuss an accomplishment or event, formal or informal, that marked your transition from childhood to adulthood within your culture, community, or family.”
