Chocolate: The Fountain of Youth

This is the news women (and men!) across the world have been hoping for. Chocolate has been found to be a super food that (gasp!) slows the aging process. Yes, you read that correctly — chocolate is the fountain of youth!

Scientific research coming out of England claims that chocolate has been found to be an “anti-aging wonder drug.” How is this possible, you ask? Well, the research shows that cocoa is rich in certain flavanols that improve the skin’s oxygenation. By getting more oxygen to the skin cells, the aging process is stunted.

The flavanols in dark chocolate also help keep skin soft. The result is younger looking skin. Flavanols have properties that protect the skin from the sun’s rays. While this can help with anti-aging, it is not recommended that you skip applying sun screen.

“Everyone can benefit from the intrinsic values of cocoa without compromising their health and habits,” said study scientist Dr. Ivan Petyaev from Lycotec, where the study was conducted. However, it is important to note that a little chocolate goes a long way. Increasing chocolate consumption also increases calories and fat. Choose chocolates wisely to get the most nutritional bang for your buck!

What kind of chocolates are best? Good question! Look for chocolates that are high in cocoa — at least 70 percent. Chocolates that are high in antioxidants are the best for combating the signs of aging, including wrinkled skin, dull hair, low energy and brain fog, just to name a few. The healthiest chocolates come from cold-pressed cacao. The cold-press process prevents the antioxidants from deteriorating before consumption.

Also look for chocolates made from natural cocoa butter and natural sweeteners. Healthy chocolates never use fillers, waxes, oils or milk solids. Two other items to note are to eat chocolates that do not alkalize, and always ensure that the manufacturer preserves optimal levels of antioxidants and nutrients.
