Business casual is an odd and sometimes frightening middle ground in the American workplace. We know the expectations of a traditional suit-and-tie office, and there’s no problem figuring out what to wear in a casual workplace. It’s that pesky limbo of business casual that forces us to more deeply consider our wardrobes.
Don’t worry, we’re here to help with some general rules and specific suggestions!
General Rules
Keep in mind that every office will differ on the scale of business casual, but there are a few rules that will apply no matter where your office falls on the scale.
- Don’t mistake business casual for a dress code. Dress codes usually involve chinos and a polo or button-down, but business casual is generally dressier and gives you more options.

- On that note, leave the polos on the tennis court and golf course, and short-sleeved button-down “dress” shirts should never make it into your closet.
- Never wear frayed or stained clothing, no matter how casual the office. And remember that “casual Friday” does not mean anything goes. Always keep it clean, neat and pressed, no matter what the dress standards.
- Take notes on what your boss wears rather than your coworkers. After all, you never know what edge will get you that promotion.
- It’s always better to be overdressed than underdressed, generally speaking.
- Fit is king. Many men wear their button-downs and pants far too baggy in the belief that it will be more comfortable. But if your clothes fit you correctly, you will have plenty of mobility and comfort without the bulk of excess fabric.
Specific Suggestions
Experimentation is key, but once you take the time to figure out what works best for you, dressing appropriately and comfortably will get easier and
faster.
- Sport coats will be your best friend, whether you like to keep it conservative or make a bold statement. Your fabric, pattern and color choices are virtually limitless!
- Sweaters and cardigans work well with a shirt and tie as an alternative to a jacket, and they are perfect for colder weather layering with a jacket on top. Try layering with one bold piece while keeping the others conservative.
- If your office allows jeans, wear them in the darkest, inkiest wash you can find. Dark washes look dressier and will pair better with a sport coat or a fine knit.
- Accessories are a great way to experiment with your
style and to infuse your ensemble with personality. A conservative jacket with a bright pocket square or tie can do the trick. Also consider bow ties, mixing patterns that are in the same color pallet, and boldly patterned socks. - Suits can often be broken up to give your wardrobe more flexibility. Wear the trousers with a sport coat or the jacket with trousers in a different fabric.
- You can stick with the same dress shoe you wear with your suits or wear a more causal shoe. Try a suede shoe or a refined chukka.
