Bring the family together with a game of dodgeball this holiday dinner.

From Thanksgiving to New Years, you can expect to see a number of articles on how to get along with your family.  There tends to be a universal understanding that when you get the family together, there’s potential for tension, arguments, or fighting.  There are standard tips such as avoiding talking about politics or sensitive issues and not drinking too much, but why not try something a little unconventional?

How about dodgeball?  Rather than airing grievances and getting worked up about the past election, start the party in the garage with a dozen foam balls.   Don’t even speak before hand.  Keep to the basic rules of course: no head shots, maintain boundaries, etc. The purpose of this exercise is to remember that you’re together because you’re family, or you enjoy the company of one another, or both!

Dodge-ball might seem a bit extreme, especially if you don’t have kids, but give yourselves an opportunity to disarm a little before the big feast and have fun. Create an experience that brings you together rather than trying to find a middle ground. Physical activity is a great way to do this.  If dodgeball isn’t up your alley try something else.  Go for a walk, play with the kids, build a snowman or even start with a random board game.  Just have fun, and make it last till dessert!
