Are you using LinkedIn as a tool for your job search? How to get connected

12602092_SNetworking is a critical strategy for any serious job seeker. It’s likely that you already have a LinkedIn profile set up to showcase your talents and connect with other professionals in your field, but do you know the best practices to get noticed? Here are some basic tips to ensure that your LinkedIn profile is memorable for all the right reasons!

First, (although it might seem obvious) you definitely want to make yourself attractive to employers with the right photo. Why? While you don’t need to post a glamour shot or a picture of yourself with your family and friends – and really, it’s better if you don’t – you certainly want use a good, professional headshot that will make the right impression.

Post a headshot that really looks like you, so that people can find you in the crowd – especially if you’re attending networking events. People might remember your face, instead of your name, and seeing your headshot will help recruiters to remember you, especially if they’re working from a list or a sea of business cards gathered at an event.screen-shot-2012-09-10-at-3-34-56-pm4

Another common sense tip: Don’t forget to update your status regularly. The updates should be friendly, helpful and professional. Post about a colleague that earned a promotion. Share a great article you wrote. Be engaged – this is the one time it’s a good idea to talk about yourself!

Here are six more great tips, recommended by the professionals at Forbes, to get the most out of your LinkedIn page:

  • Customize your URL – Did you know you can drive up your Google search ranking just by using your first and last name, with no spaces, as your unique URL? Do it by clicking the “Public Profile” tool on you LinkedIn page.
  • Be inclusive – Don’t leave your employer’s website, or clients off your page. This expands your network and adds to your credibility! Also add any personal websites or links to samples of your work.
  • Use key words wisely to polish your career summary – Write up your experiences and accomplishments in 100-300 words, using terms and phrases that add value in your industry and could attract recruiters.
  • Make it personal — Network with colleagues from current and past workplaces. Always include a customized, personal note.
  • Check out the competition – Search for them using the “Advanced” link in the upper right-hand corner. Use the information to watch, learn and research possible job opportunities.
  • Get recommendations – Always take the opportunity to get former bosses, colleagues or even someone who reported to you to write up some good references. Bonus tip: “It’s okay to write it yourself and then invite the person to vet and post it.”
