Are you feeling like an adrenaline junkie hooked on a super-sized life? No one warned you that one day you’d be putting on a class-A juggling act. Even if some naysayers offered the occasional advice that you might be overdoing it, you were flying through life too fast to hear it.
That high-powered career, a wonderful family and a drive to achieve perfection in all that you do can and will undo your health, ladies. Whip out that to-do list and take a second look. It’s pretty amazing, isn’t it? Consider for a moment (if you can spare one!) how much you’ve packed into that 24-hour day.
It’s true you haven’t dropped even one of those many balls you’re juggling — yet. But packing in career, marriage and motherhood, perfect parties and a toned body — all of it begs a question: When will the inevitable crash come?
While pundits exhort women to give their all to work so they can count on a corner office post-motherhood, more women are finding exhaustion to be their constant companion. It’s true; burning the proverbial candle day in and day out negatively impacts your health.
While all of us are familiar with the term ‘adrenaline,’ not many people associate it with the adrenals, two tiny glands that sit atop the kidneys and are responsible for regulating our stress hormones. Stop for a moment and think about those overworked adrenal glands that juice your day. They need some bench time, ladies.
When your blood pressure rises or your heart starts beating fast, those adrenal glands start pumping cortisol and adrenaline into your body in response to stress. It’s a good thing when you’re running from a wild beast (or simply standing your ground in an argument!), but it stinks as a steady diet. Living like the Energizer Bunny doesn’t cut it long-term. You can always replace Bunny’s batteries when they run down but reviving your tired, exhausted body requires continual, comprehensive care.
Ask yourself these questions:
- Are you chronically exhausted?
- Do you grab junk food in place of healthy meals?
- Are you too busy or too tired to exercise?
- What supplements do you need to restore balance?
- Is delegating on your list of to-dos?
You’ll have more to give in all areas of your life when you feel vibrantly healthy. So put yourself on your to-do list. Have your hormone levels checked. After all, there’s a reason those airline emergency drills tell you to put your own oxygen mask on first!
