A Real Nickel and Dime Investigation

If Florida authorities have their way, clubs collecting money from players to fund tournaments will no longer be par for the course.

Police in Tarpon Springs, Fla., are investigating whether that activity is considered gambling — and in violation of state law.

Seriously.

“You call any course you want (about gambling leagues) and they will all tell you the same thing, and if they don’t, I’ll buy you the biggest steak in the state,” holder Ray Hamil told the Tampa Times newspaper.

While it seems as though throwing money into a tournament purse is about as petty a “crime” can get, Golf Digest reports that a violation could be considered a felony.

Tarpon Springs GC general manager Chuck Winship told Golf Digest that similar leagues are something “every club in America has.” Perhaps not for long if the club gets busted for this ”green-collar crime.”
