A pregame routine may be the secret sauce

High school varsity basketball team huddles together before game start. Uniforms are yellow, purple and white. Professional athletes have pregame routines that help settle them before jumping into game speed. Many of them established those routines in high school, so it’s time to ask yourself: Do you have a pregame routine, and does it work?

Believe it or not, your pregame routine should span all the way into the night before your big game. Organize your jersey, socks, shoes and other gear before you go to bed. Eat a full and well-rounded meal for dinner and get a good night of sleep. Make sure you’re staying hydrated, too.

The day of your game, be sure to avoid drinks and snacks that will result in an energy crash. Caffeinated beverages and sports drinks can give you energy at first, but then, suddenly, your energy levels might fall. Pick your pregame fuel wisely.

In the hours winding down to the game, some players like to throw on headphones and focus. Others like to keep it loose with jokes and conversations with teammates. Find your preference and stick to it.

Sometimes a shooting and stretching routine on the court can help players gain confidence for the game. The pros all have their own quirks that help them find a rhythm. Be sure to partake in all your team warm-ups, but if you find that there are particular shots you want to warm up, then ask your coach. He or she will probably understand and suggest a good time for your to do so.

Don’t worry how odd the quirks or exercise are that you add to your routine, there have been weirder ones. Do what works for you.
