In most Virginia counties and Washington DC, you’re required to supply working smoke detectors on every floor of your rental units. We also suggest equipping a fire extinguisher in each kitchen. If you have an older smoke detector, replace it with a newer option with easy battery access. Remember to do routine maintenance to check for fire hazards regularly, too.
