We’ve all heard the saying that “the only constant is change.” And while that’s true, it doesn’t necessarily make life any easier when change comes knocking at the door. Change can come in many forms: environmental, physical, financial, personal, even down to the clothes you wear or a new home.
Is it possible to learn how to deal with change in advance, so that when the winds of change blow, you’re not only ready but actually welcoming what’s coming? We think so. Here’s a few steps to make dealing with change a bit more comfortable:
Realize that change is inevitable. Sounds simple, right? But just accepting the fact that change will come regardless of how secure things seem can go a long way toward helping you more readily accept the reality of a changing situation.
Pay attention to what’s happening around you. Sometimes it’s easier to ignore what’s going on around us, even when the signs are clear. The declining health of a loved one, a company’s plans to restructure, or reports on the evening news that political changes are coming — in every realm of life, strive to be aware of the circumstances and conditions around you. No one likes to be caught off-guard, so to soften the blow when change comes, learn to anticipate what might be coming and whatever is ahead.
Look for new opportunities in the change. When people have a focus or purpose in mind, they feel energized by the new opportunities that change can bring. Take some time to define — or redefine — your purpose. It’s normal to feel some resistance to change when it seems that your purpose is being “repurposed,” but change can actually shed some new light on the direction you want to take in life. Look for ways that the change can benefit, rather than deter, your goals and efforts.
As you learn to deal with change, you’ll find you have an advantage in most changing situations. Be ahead of the curve and prepare for new opportunities!
