Parabens: Why Synergy leaves them out of its personal care line

With the same attention to quality and health, Synergy’s personal care line offers skin care products in a paraben-free formula.

So what are parabens, and why shouldn’t they be part of your skin care regime?

Take a look at just about any cosmetic, shampoo or lotion bottle in your bathroom cabinet. Chances are, you’ll find plenty of paraben chemicals listed in the ingredients. Parabens such as methylparaben, propylparaben, ethylparaben and butylparaben are all preservatives. When combined with other common preservatives in beauty products, they can release formaldehyde into your body.

Parabens have captured attention for not-so-flattering reasons. Some studies suggest that once inside the body, those chemicals imitate the female hormone estrogen and contribute to the development of breast cancer and other abnormalities.

A study published in the Journal of Applied Toxicology found traces of parabens in the breast-cancer tumors of 19 out of 20 study participants. Additionally, the Centers for Disease Control tested more than 2,000 people and found that nearly all of them had parabens in their urine, suggesting the body had difficulty metabolizing those chemicals.

Although the Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of parabens in products, food and pharmaceuticals at low levels, parabens are now found in more than 25,000 common household products. But they aren’t contained in Synergy’s skin care products, which are paraben-free.
