The great debate over the formal dining room
One of the great debates in home trends right now is the need, or lack of, for a formal dining room. There was a time when no one would have even considered building a home without one. Then again, there was also a time when every house had a parlor. The truth is, many homeowners are remodeling their homes right now for the sole purpose of ditching the formal dining room. They say it’s a big waste and can think of a million different ways they’d rather use the space.
The argument is that a formal dining room is used very little, only for special occasions and holidays. So why not use that space for a room that can be used year-round, like a music room or a library? Better yet, the space could be convertible. Sure, it’s a den today, but it could easily become a nursery, playroom or guest room tomorrow.
Some homeowners say that in lieu of a dining room, they prefer a large, open kitchen with a semi-formal dining area to having a smaller kitchen and separate dining space. In fact, the current trend in kitchens is to maximize space — vaulted ceilings, lots of windows and islands with plenty of storage. And there is an effort to go green with energy-efficient appliances and flooring, such as bamboo. No need for the dining room when there’s plenty of room in the kitchen!
Dining room or no dining room? Definitely something to consider in your home renovation plans.
Don’t let a dirty bathroom ruin your image

Consequently, businesses have to be extra careful in making sure their locations are presentable. Otherwise, an unflattering camera pic of a stained sink or a littered floor can turn into a web sensation on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. Unfortunately, people don’t hold back. They are more than willing to share their experiences — whether good or bad — with friends, family, coworkers and so forth. Turns out, one of the popular pics on social media is the all-too-common grimy bathroom shot.
Ready for a frightening statistic? A survey by Harris Interactive for SCA Tissue North America found that 50 percent of people who were ‘grossed out’ by a restaurant bathroom shared the experience with their friends on social media. Yikes! The last thing a business needs is a photo of their dirty bathroom sink floating around on Facebook or Instagram. And even more concerning, 3 out of 10 people surveyed said they would NOT return to a business that had a dirty bathroom. That’s especially true for parents, who tend to be less forgiving about their youngsters using germy-looking facilities.
The best way to handle a potentially bad PR situation? Don’t let it happen at all! At JAN-PRO, we’ll make sure your facilities are looking nice with hospital-grade disinfectants that are environmentally safe and effective. We want to make sure you never see your name pop up on social media above an image of a dirty bathroom.
