The importance of proper posture

businesswoman neck painIn today’s world, most jobs require computer-based work. Most professionals are left sitting at their desks for the entire work day. This could cause some health problems, especially if one does not hold an appropriate posture when sitting in their chair.

If you hold the right posture, less strain will be placed on supporting muscles and ligaments, according to a publication from the Cleveland Clinic. Additionally, holding your back and neck straight will decrease the likelihood of arthritis in your joints later on in life. Also, if you feel overly tired at the end of the day, it may be due to your body’s muscles straining to hold joints in an unnatural position. Proper posture can actually decrease fatigue.

The healthcare industry handles a large amount of patients complaining of backaches or neck pain. The Chiropractic Economics publication reported that more than 116 million Americans suffer from chronic pain at some point in their lives. One of the easiest ways to prevent such pain is to keep your back straight and shoulders back. Proper posture also includes distributing your weight evenly on both your hips and bending your knees at a right angle when sitting in a chair.

In addition, you might want to get up and move around for a few minutes every half hour in order to keep your body limber and flexible. Avoid looking too closely at your computer monitor. Keep your head back instead of right up against the screen. Instead, increase the zoom feature on your desktop.

If your job isn’t solely based on sitting at a desk, but instead includes lifting heavy objects (packages, furniture, etc.), make sure to keep your back straight and bend at your knees and hips before picking up any items.

If you are suffering from chronic neck or back pain and improving posture isn’t helping, make an appointment to see a chiropractor who can help adjust your spine and relieve your aches.
