Wallflowers: Don’t let a shy personality hold you back

Attractive woman covering her face with both hands. Isolated on whiteIf you struggle with shyness that can work against you, particularly if you’ve been tasked with attending in-person networking events. Perhaps it’s time to tackle that reticence.

Remember you are not the only person in the room that may be a little nervous at a networking event. If you have a buddy with you that can help you overcome the jitters. But there’s also a down side to attending an event with a friend alongside. Shy souls will happily bask in someone else’s shadow and that’s not going to help a businessperson increase their circle of connections.

Here are some suggestions to calm the nerves. First, we’ll cover the don’ts. Resist the urge to clam up. Yes, it may seem like the safe option, but the things we lose by retreating to the corner could include that once-in-a-lifetime momentous opportunity. Keep that potential reward in mind. Even those who are terrified of swimming will plunge into the water to save a child.

Your ‘baby’ is your business. Focus on your passion for your business. That will give you an added impetus to resist running to the powder room, because you have a case of the jitters.

Rehearse your own introduction before you leave for the meeting. Even if you flub your planned intro, just saying those first few words will break the ice and the other person will start to pick up the conversation, too. It’s a partnership in a way. Most people who perceive they may be talking to a wallflower will be gracious and will carry a little more of the ‘conversational’ load, so to speak.

If you only chat with a couple of people, that is O.K. One new connection can yield a substantial return – and even if it doesn’t, you are one step further to better managing your shyness.
