That ‘mirror, mirror on the wall…’ is a decorating staple for us all

Classic Dining RoomWhat’s the one object of interest that is most often overlooked, but is a decorating must-have for home design? The “fairest of them all” is most certainly the mirror you add to walls to improve the light, depth and style of your rooms!

Here’s little secret interior designers know: The right mirror reflects the best elements of your home design, and can make any space seem bigger. Although a good mirror might at first glance go mostly unnoticed in a room (as compared to a piece of art or a sculpture), it adds functionality while acting as an artistic focal point.

It’s also fairly simple to find a mirror that will complement the design style in any room. The choices are virtually endless. That’s why mirrors have become a home decorating staple! If you’re thinking of adding one to your home, we’ve got some simple tips to help you make the right selection.

First, try imagining of a mirror as a versatile, moveable window. They work amazingly well when placed opposite another window in a room to bring more depth and light to a space.

Another great way to use a mirror is as a focal piece of art work. A mirror with a chunky frame leaned up against a wall can add interest.

For a small room, a large mirror is often a clever way to open up the space. Try finding a mirror that will cover a large portion of the wall. Go big for drama. A floor to ceiling mirror gives great impact and opens a small space. Or, try grouping several small mirrors together to create one big visual impact.

Mirrors are perfect for an entryway, which is typically small and lacking in natural light. Set it on an entryway table leaning against the wall or hang it along the wall. (Practical tip: A mirror of any size placed in an entryway can also be used to check your outfit on your way out the door.)

You can also use mirrors to set moods, when you have a special occasion. Here’s another design secret: Temporarily place a large mirror in a room with low light and light candles to reflect a warm glow.

A final tip: Always check what will be reflected in the mirror once after you hang it by standing in the spot and looking at the opposite wall. If you don’t like the view, consider moving the mirror higher to create a more interesting focal point. And consider getting a second point of view by contacting us!
