Where is America moving to? That’s an important question for retail and restaurant companies. That’s because population growth is a key element in determining where to open a new location. It’s no surprise that a number of the best markets for retail and restaurant expansion are those places with strong population growth. For a look at where America is moving to, view United Van Lines’ Migration Study. This annual report tracks the states the company’s customers are moving to and from over the course of each year.

According to the company, the top inbound states of 2013 were (drumroll, please) Oregon, followed by South Carolina, North Carolina, Washington, D.C., South Dakota, Nevada, Texas and Colorado. Markets ‘in balance,’ meaning that there’s about the same amount of people moving in that are moving out, include Nebraska, Tennessee, Iowa, Alabama, Louisiana and Indiana.

Census Bureau data provides a more accurate look at population growth patterns over time. For more information, read the latest report.
