There are a few things you should definitely do after a massage, and a handful of things you absolutely shouldn’t. Here are some ways to get the most out of your massage, without sabotaging its healing effects.
Do:
Drink water – Chances are, you should probably be drinking more water anyway. But after a massage, you may experience soreness from lactic acid being released by your muscles. To help flush these achey toxins, drink lots of water for 24 hours after your massage.
Take a bath – Help your muscles relax further by taking a warm, relaxing bath. Your mind will continue to unwind and you won’t be adding stress to your post massage body.
Sleep comfortably – You’ll likely sleep very deeply the night after you get a massage. Be sure that you’re positioned comfortably for the night, so that you don’t wake up sore tomorrow.
Don’t:
Drink alcohol – Alcohol works in the exact opposite way of water, and actually removes water from your cells. Stay away from your favorite poison, or expect to be doubly achey the day after your massage.
Nap in an uncomfortable position – Don’t pass out in your chair, or slumped on the couch. Sleeping deeply in the wrong position can misalign your body and make you very sore the next day.
Strain yourself during exercise – Be careful of strenuous or challenging exercise right after a massage. Your muscles will be sensitive and prone to tears or injury, so be sure to take precautions before any kind of physical activity. Stretching is encouraged, but leave the free weights alone for a day.
Make sure to take excellent care of yourself for 24 hours after your massage. This will prevent injury and help you get the most out of your massage experience.
