Create an illusion of space with home flooring

Stairway to finished basement in home interior with wood paneling and cork flooringIf you’re looking to create the illusion of more space in a room, you might want to direct your attention to the floor. Yes, that’s right. The right flooring can make all the difference in the world.

Here are a few of our favorite tricks to create the illusion of space:

  1.  Lay flooring on a diagonal. This technique draws your eye to see the pattern from a different perspective, thus creating more visual interest.
  2. Embrace dark wood. Paired with the right combination of wall color, trim and molding, darker stains suggest space.
  3. Size matters. Larger tiles (bigger than 12”) are another trick to enhance visual space.
  4. Be consistent. Join adjacent spaces with the same type of flooring material. If you must deviate, stay within the same color family.

You may not be able to change the size of a room, but you can use these tricks to create more visual appeal. If you want to think beyond flooring, there are other easy ways to attain the same result.
