Fundraising is all about the love

Tina Turner’s song, “What’s love got to do with it?” might apply to more than just relationships and the human heart. According to Business Insider: Love has absolutely everything to do with fundraising. Tina didn’t see that one coming, did she?

Money can be an awkward topic. Asking for it can make people feel evenlove more uncomfortable. So, begin your ask by encouraging your donor to “fall deeply, madly, irrationally in love with you and your cause,” Business Insider advises. “When you think about it, the act of giving away money is totally irrational, so the more you engage a donor’s rational thought process, the further you are from success.”

Show passion for what you’re doing. Talk about the exciting trip you’ll get to go on with your team if you raise the required funds. Tell your donor about how you live for your chosen sport, and how their donation will help you cover uniform, travel and participation costs. Go into detail about the boy with cancer you’re helping. Discuss how he’s doing and how a financial contribution will ease his family’s burdens.

Once your donor realizes how important your cause is, perhaps you’ll open his or her heart to a little love. Once you’ve accomplished this, asking for support will feel a lot more natural.
