Increase your financial strength

If you’re a recent college grad thinking of striking out on your own, it can seem pretty scary at times. That’s particularly so as the U.S. is just now emerging from the impact of budgetary bickering among our political parties that led to a temporary government shutdown.

Political wrangling will always be a part of the American experience and a young professional should not be overly disturbed by contentious debates. Even so, it’s very important to remember that sound financial planning is appropriate no matter the times or seasons.

Even so, it can be unsettling to live in an age when the nation’s leaders are not practicing sound financial policies.

So, what’s an aspiring professional going to do with a sheepskin that likely came with a high price tag amid a U.S. political system that cannot seem to rein in excess spending?

While it’s true our nation has been buffeted by strenuous arguments over the allocation and collection of taxes, keep in mind political arguments will come and go as they have for centuries. But here’s the good news: Sound money management principles are enduring, regardless of politically-driven back-and-forth negotiations over government spending.

The best advice for young grads is to practice fiscal discipline. It may be an old-fashioned concept, but squirreling away a sum from every paycheck puts a young person on the road to building fiscal discipline. And make no doubt about it: Instilling that discipline is crucial to building a prosperous future. That still remains true when times are turbulent and fraught with political wrangling.

When young professionals start saving a portion of their paychecks at regular intervals, they are poised to become investors in their own future. If you need a little more discipline to build your wealth, start with an automatic payroll deduction to a 401K or an IRA.

When you hit a particular goal in your savings plan give yourself a small reward. Those self-given incentives help forge what can turn out to be a lifetime habit of saving for the future.
