As we get closer to the winter season, temperatures are dropping lower and lower each night. Depending on your location, this could mean freezing is in your near future – if it hasn’t happened already.
Most plants won’t survive the extremes of nippy days and chilly nights. To keep your plants safe and warm when temperatures start to dip, follow these easy steps!
During a lighter frost or mild freeze, a sheet or light blanket will protect your fragile annuals. You can tuck them in with a light layer before sunset, then remove the covers in the morning so your plants can get plenty of sun.

But before you cover your plants with a blanket be sure it’s not raining, as the fabric can absorb the water and turn into a heavy blanket of ice.
You might also want to try adding pine chips or mulch around the plants, which can help to keep the roots from freezing.
The easiest plants to care for during the fall and winter months are potted plants and perennials. Potted plants can be brought inside, and perennials are hardier and able to withstand extreme temperatures. Your perennials shouldn’t need any extra attention, even in the cold.
