As the weather starts turning cooler, many of us will want to take full advantage of the last sunny days of the season by taking an after-work walk with the dog out and around the neighborhood or through the Jordan River Parkway in Murray. In either case, you’ll want to know before you go how to make the experience the best it can be for you, your dog and your neighbors!

First, let’s lay it on the line: Dogs should always be walked on a leash for safety. The Jordan River Parkway is an on-leash-area, so don’t forget to buckle up your four-legged friend. What kind of leash is best? The short answer is whatever is most comfortable for you and your dog.

That said, the ASPCA offers these tips for leashes. Use a flexi-leash for walks in the park where it’s safe to let out the line so your dog can explore a bit further away from you than allowed on a sidewalk. However, remember to hold the line at high-traffic times, such as when there are a lot of other families, walkers, joggers and bicyclists out on the parkway to avoid tripping yourself, your dog or anyone else up.

Leather leashes are easiest on the hands, but chain leashes can be a better choice if your dog likes to tug on or bite the leash. Nylon leases can cut into your hands, but hold up better in wet weather.

If your dog likes to tug on his or her leash, and gets excited by wildlife, other dogs or people, read this article with some great tips for teaching your dog not to pull on the leash. You might also try using a head halter or schedule your walks for less busy times of day.

You’ll definitely want to remember to be a responsible pet owner and pick up after your dog after s/he uses the bathroom. Did you know the city has posted plastic bags you can pick up at many of the trailheads along the parkway route in Murray? Take advantage of this service, or remember to bring your own bags (one for scooping and one for storage) to keep the trail clean and safe for everyone.
