Now is a great time to be searching for a job in the IT industry! Overall unemployment levels nationwide are down, and the number of jobs gained in the technology industry continues to outpace job creation in other sectors.
Recently, The Washington Post‘s Mohana Ravindranath reported that, based on studies done this year, the demand for skilled information technology professionals has and will continue to grow. Results reported in July from a study done by TechServe Alliance showed that jobs grew by almost 6 percent since the end of 2012.
TechServe Alliance Chief Executive Mark Roberts, as quoted in the story, said the only challenge for IT leaders would be finding the right people to fill the jobs: “[An] inadequate supply of talent, not demand, represents our greatest challenge to achieving the full potential for IT employment growth in the U.S.”
Where are the top job markets for IT professionals? Massachusetts is one of the top states for tech job creation this year, and is second only to New Jersey for the highest percentage of growth from 2012.

In Massachusetts, about 2,600 new positions were created from December 2012 to August 2013. The Boston area was noted as a center for demand, with 13 percent of local area technology executives surveyed saying they expected to expand their IT teams at the end of 2013.
The top skills in demand were network administration, database management and desktop support in the thriving Boston area, and nationwide.
“Massachusetts is one of those states that you’d expect to see here as a technology center. I think one of the things that help the greater Boston area is that you have overall tech demand and community building is strong. One of the success stories about Massachusetts is that you’ve got a very strong community that helps shape and grow that culture in a big way,” said study firm Dice’s Scot Melland.
