Physical activity is hugely important for children. It is recommended that children and adolescents participate in at least one hour of moderate or vigorous physical activity every day.
Even if a child doesn’t have a full 60 minutes of free time available, parents should attempt to provide two 30-minute exercise breaks. Otherwise, a child who sits around the house, stuck to the couch watching television or eating ice cream is more likely to develop health problems or issues with weight.
In this day of electronics — it seems like kids constantly have their hands on an Iphone,
ipod or other electronic device — it can be hard to convince them to forget about what’s on the screen in front of them and get up and moving around. But, there are ways to make it happen. Here are some tips for parents and grandparents to help get the kids to drop the electronics and embrace activity:
Take them to the park. This sounds almost too basic to be a legitimate tip. But, the truth is, the park offers all kinds of activities for even the most sedentary children. Go for a walk, swing across the monkey bars or start a game of tag.
Visit a museum. This is a great way to combine education and exercise. They’ll be walking around and learning at the same time!
Pop in a workout video. Find a workout that you and your child can do together. Make it exciting, encouraging them to help you choose the video and keeping them motivated throughout the workout.
