How a plaque can cause Peyronie’s Disease

When Peyronie’s Disease is diagnosed, sometimes a thickened scar may be felt along the shaft of the penis. This is referred to as a “plaque” and contains a higher amount of collagen. This increased collagen results in the scar being less flexible and more rigid. The increased rigidity may then lead to penile deformity, such as indentation, shortening, or curvature. Sometimes, this plaque may be seen on penile ultrasound, although often an ultrasound is not able to visualize the true size of the full plaque.
