Fall landscaping tasks lay the groundwork for a better yard all year long

goldenrodDid you know that fall is an important season for landscaping your yard and garden? Don’t let the cooler temperatures and shorter days lull you into a sense of complacency. Now is the best time to ensure that your garden is set to thrive next summer! Although most of us don’t think of the autumn and winter seasons as prime time for landscaping, experienced gardeners know that by completing a few key tasks now, you improve your enjoyment of your yard all year long!

It’s not all about raking leaves in the fall. Autumn is an excellent time to seed your yard. Temperatures are cooler, and fall is often full of the moisture the seedlings will need to sprout, and you’re more likely to have less foot traffic on the area that might destroy the new patch.

Fall is also prime tree planting season, not only due to environmental conditions but also because many garden centers put their inventory on sale! The fall months – September, October and November – are also the best time to plant flower bulbs for the same reasons.

And speaking of flower beds, it’s time to put your garden to sleep for the colder seasons coming. You’ll want to trim plants, clean up diseased foliage and remove dead annual flowers.

But DO feel free to leave some of the fresher clippings out.  If you leave some healthy ground cover, though you may have more clean up to do in the spring, you will leave a layer that composts naturally and can enrich your garden next year.

Finally, don’t forget to wrap delicate bushes and foliage in burlap to protect from heavy winds.
