Boulder citizens propose ‘nature rights law’

protestorsWe’ve heard of picketing in the name of nature, but citizens of Boulder, Colorado, are taking their peaceful protests to the next level. Rather than just save a single tree, field, or plot of land, they’re projecting a law that will save them all. The proposed “nature rights law” has yet to be voted on, but if passed, would give flowers, grass, and any other living thing, a punitive right to life equal to that of humans. Essentially, the law would give “human” rights to other living things.

So far, citizens have held pickets and created signs to help spread their cause. Due to continual destruction of nature and a lack of laws that support ecosystems, the group said, they put their plan into action. Many oppose the law, simply due to its wording. Others support the idea, but think it should be put into stricter terms.

However, the law will be voted on by city council, not by the public. To learn more about Boulder’s pro-flower movement, head to the Denver Westword.
