Grilling out is one of the best aspects of late spring and pretty much all of summer. And, when it comes to cooking out, we’ve all gotten pretty good at the following classics: chicken, seafood, steak, barbecue pork and veggies. But when you think about it, barbecuing is so much more than that. With grilling season in the near future, you’ll want to start planning your summer meals in advance, and we’ve got some creative ideas for you. Whenever you’re itching for something more than a burger, we’ve got some unconventional but delicious foods that can take the heat.
1. Meatballs.
Yes, you read that correctly. Mama’s meatballs aren’t just made for Sunday sauce anymore. Amp up your meatballs with an added smokey flavor by tossing them on the grill. Enjoy them in pasta sauce, on a sub or alone.
2. Watermelon.
This one is down-right crazy — crazy delicious, that is. Watermelon has a unique flavor some describe as savory when it’s grilled. Greek yogurt is the perfect complement to this tasty treat. You could even add some granola on top and drizzle it with honey for a one-of-a-kind breakfast.
3. Nectarines.
Here’s yet another delicious fruit you might have never thought to put on the grill. Grilling fruit can bring out delicious and intense flavors through caramelization. Combine sweet and savory by putting goat cheese in the center of the nectarine and drizzling it with balsamic.
4. Pound cake.
Moist pound cake can be made into a delicious, toasty treat. This is best served with grilled fruit and whipped cream on top. Hint: You can experiment with other pastries such as doughnuts.
5. Polenta.
Typically mushy, polenta can also be made with a delectable crunch. Toss grilled polenta slices in pasta sauce for an unexpected dish.
6. Pizza.
Craving pizza with a twist? For a slightly charred and chewy texture, toss it on the grill!
We hope these ideas have you surprising your family and guests all summer long. Happy grilling!
