Recruiting specialists are finding that many of the best candidates are using mobile devices to apply for jobs and are most likely to respond during the evening and overnight. Bullhorn, which provides recruiting software and applicant tracking systems, analyzed actual data usage to find that 43 percent of mobile usage performed by recruiting professionals happens after 5 p.m., after the traditional workday ends.

These findings are confirmed by the experts at Careerbuilder.com. In a recent article, author Mary Lorenz explains how the use of mobile technology as a recruitment tool is fast becoming a best practice for anyone seeking talented candidates. “Mobile technologies enable employers to reach the millions of job seekers who use mobile devices to search for jobs, research companies and connect with referrals,” she says. “The sooner employers and recruiters realize this, the more competitive they will be in their search for top candidates.”

Lorenz also adds,“Employers and recruiters who don’t ‘go mobile’ will simply get left behind. … Today, the first thing people do when they wake up is grab their phones and check their messages – and regularly check in throughout the day, right until they put the phone down to go to sleep.”

With the current trend toward BYOD, or bring your own device to work, it makes sense that the top candidates would be also be using mobile to search for jobs and connect with employers. Not only are you more likely to reach someone tracking their job search on a smartphone or other mobile device, but job seekers also tend to expect that there’s more privacy on personal mobile devices, and they feel more freedom to respond without fear that colleagues, if they already have a job, will find out.
