GarageDoorWithGraffitiExterior lighting is both functional and aesthetic. A home looks more inviting with lighting. While it can be tempting to only think practically about this lighting, you can also have some fun with this decorative outdoor element.

The first order of business is to decide how many you’ll need. The number will depend on the purpose and garage door size. For a single-car garage,  one larger lantern style light between the house and the garage or over the garage door, or two smaller lights on either side of the door will do the job. With a two-car or larger garage, it is best to have at least one light on each side of the door and one in the middle, if possible. If you’re at a loss for how many would work best, you might need try this: Spend time at the end of your driveway and across the street to see how the lighting will work, in terms of form and function.

As for size, you should err on the side of big. Too-small lighting is a common mistake made by homeowners. As a rule, the size of the fixture should be one-quarter to one-third the size of the height of the garage door opening when installed on either side.

Once you have checked quantity and size off your list, you should consider other features. For example, some homeowners opt for motion detectors for home security. Timers can also add convenience and save energy. Decide what features are important to you, and go from there.

So, let there be light!
