It’s a battle likely as old as humanity itself: getting kids to eat vegetables, of course! While there’s no sure-fire way to ensure kids are getting their daily recommended servings, you can try a few tips to sneak in those greens. Here are a few tried and true ones, straight from expert mothers:
1. Get them while they’re hungry: If they’re hungry, they’ll eat. Before dinner, serve an
appetizer of colorful vegetables, such as carrots, cucumbers and red bell peppers.
2. Institute the “no thank you bite” rule: Tell your child he has to take a bite before vetoing something on his plate.
3. Make up cute names: For example, broccoli can be “little trees.”
4. Shop with your kids: Not only is this bonding experience, it can be a great way to introduce new foods. Encourage them to look at the color and texture.
5. Cook with your kids: Again, this can be both a bonding and educational experience.
6. Hide the veggies: You can artfully hide veggies in everything from quesadillas to pasta. If they can’t see it, they won’t even know that it’s there!
7. Make fruits and vegetables the easy option: Stock a kid-accessible shelf in your fridge with little bags of cut fruit and vegetables, applesauce and fruit cups.
It may take a little creativity, but you can make eating a balanced diet fun!
