Sound design and customer flow

Perhaps no other factor is more crucial to a franchisee’s success than choosing the right location. And, it’s a tricky business. Especially if you’re dreaming of the Holy Grail in site location: High-traffic, ease of access, and no high-volume competition nearby.

For owners of food franchises especially, it can be a real juggling act, because that flow of customers is rarely steady. When the restaurant or drive-thru window is filled to capacity, people may opt for the place down the street rather than endure the wait.

On the other hand, when the lunch or dinner rush is over and the hustle-and-bustle fades to quiet (you know, the point where people in a shared space become a little too aware of each other), you’ve got a different problem. Patrons don’t like a meal shared in silence.

It takes a lot of research and data crunching to get that flow of patrons just right, where you hit that sweet spot. Many franchisees are so busy dealing with hour-to-hour operations, they have no time to proactively take on the task of figuring out how to manage the in-store traffic flow.

Even so, an acoustical engineer may be able to eliminate those perturbingly quiet times, or conversely add a sense of liveliness, through designing a sound system that takes those factors into consideration. A sound designer can create environmental satisfaction just as a heating and cooling expert can adjust air flow and temperature for maximum comfort.

Get that in-store traffic flowing at just the right pace, and the only sound you’ll hear will be the sound of the till raking in the dollars!
