While technology in the courtroom and law office has transformed the way justice is dispensed in the U.S., many attorneys suffer the toll of a life spent rushing from case to case, often grabbing food on the run. But there’s one tech device that could boost the fortunes of attorneys in the health-and-fitness sense: A treadmill desk.
The firm of Taft Stettinius & Hollister in Cincinnati, Ohio
practice, equipped with wireless keyboards and mice. These devices have far more bells and whistles than the average workstation and allow the seamless transfers of incoming calls to the firm’s hundred or so attorneys in Cincinnati.
It’s a wise move as treadmill desk users can burn up to 300 extra calories a day, resulting in a loss of up to 60 pounds a year. The technology could literally be life changing, as Americans by and large get far less exercise than is recommended.
“The new wave of lawyers are tech-savvy and they’re the ones saying, ‘Why can’t I have this stuff?’” said architect David Fournier, a principal with The Aztec Corp.
Attorneys at the Chicago firm of Quarles & Brady say they enjoy using treadmill desks, which allow a worker to move from a standing to sitting position and vice versa at the touch of a button. The firm’s desk treadmills have a maximum speed of two miles an hour, which enables a lawyer to work at a computer and burn some calories at the same time.
One thing is for sure: These devices will produce a new crop of fleet-footed attorneys!
