During the summer, people of all ages – from children to those well past middle age – engage in a variety of outdoor activities. And whenever people are playing sports, there’s always the risk of injury. It’s important for anyone who thinks they may have been injured to seek medical attention right away in order to reduce the risk of chronic pain or a serious health problem.

Sports injuries are more common during the summer, and athletes should use caution. ”In the winter months, people just tend to be less active,” said Dr. Martha Pryon, Austin sports medicine doctor and owner of Medicine in Motion. “Once warmer weather hits, many of us have a strong urge to get outside and be physically active. While I highly encourage that, it doesn’t mean their bodies are ready for the sudden change in activity levels. Without the proper preparations, the average person is very susceptible to injury.”
It is important to stretch before playing any sport. Stretching after physical activity is also advised to prevent pulled muscles or soreness.
Repetitive motion injuries can occur while playing baseball, golf, or tennis. For instance, tennis elbow causes inflammation in the tendons of the elbow and occurs because of improper swinging of the racket. These injuries are more difficult to treat if left untreated for a prolonged period. Speaking with a chiropractor immediately after injury is of the utmost importance. Competitive athletes should also consider utilizing sports massage therapies to increase circulation and rid the body of toxins like lactic acid build-up.
This summer, use caution when playing sports. Always stretch before and after a game and see a chiropractor if you experience any pain.
