Osteoporosis is a condition where your bones become more fragile and prone to breakage. Typical reasons for this are hormone changes, as well as calcium and vitamin deficiencies. But how do you know if you’re at a higher risk of suffering the condition than other people?
Factors within your control – and not
When it comes to increasing your risk of osteoporosis, some factors are within your control, such as smoking and having more than two alcoholic drinks per day. However, other factors – such as growing older and having certain ethnic backgrounds – are beyond your control.
Reassess your medications
Taking certain prescriptions, such as steroids, is believed to cause bone weakness. If you’re on steroids for another medical condition and worried about osteoporosis, talk to your doctor about whether an alternative prescription can be used.
Family history
Finally, perhaps the most uncontrollable factor of all is your family history of osteoporosis. If a close family member – or more than one – suffered from the disease, your risk is raised as well. Ask around about your family history, if possible, and let your healthcare practitioner know what you uncover.
