Many families and couples love to travel during the summer, whether it is taking a simple camping trip or flying off to Italy. However, patients with chronic pain may be more reluctant to plan a vacation this summer. Allay your fears! The travel tips below will allow you to enjoy a painless trip to wherever your heart desires.
Don’t Overpack
Packing light is hugely important, or else you may be left with a 50-lb bag to lug around an airport. Pack things you can reuse, and forego bringing that extra hair dryer or laptop.
Bring luggage that has wheels, and check heavy bags instead of bringing them onto your flight.
If wearing a backpack, make sure the weight is evenly distributed across your shoulders and bend at the knees when picking up any luggage. Packing a small pillow for low back or neck pain is also a good idea when on a plane or a long car ride.
Drink Plenty of Water and Eat Healthy
If flying on a plane, changes in air pressure may increase dehydration. It’s vital to keep drinking water to remain healthy. If a stewardess comes by, skip the soda or alcoholic beverage and ask for water.
Processed foods and sugars can actually cause inflammation. Choose the healthiest menu choices at restaurants. Ask the waitstaff if salads, lean meats or a side of veggies are available. Choosing fresh fruit for dessert is also a better idea if you’re battling chronic pain.
Move and Stretch as Much as Possible
Joints need movement to remain healthy. Physical activity keeps soft tissues limber, which is why it’s necessary to stretch and walk around even during travel. If driving in a car, take a break every few hours and go on a short walk. While on a plane, sit in the aisle seat and get up for a few minutes every hour. Even while sitting, take part in stretches for the neck, shoulders, back, wrists and hands.
These tips should help you enjoy a pain-free summer vacation!
