You asked. We listened. And now SV Sports carries Spikeball!
If you haven’t heard of this awesome sport, this testimonial from Spikeball.com sums it up nicely: “Spikeball — Smaller scale Volleyball. Larger scale Fun.”
Here’s another endorsement: “Best 4 player game you take and play anywhere! FACT.”
And one more from the official website: “Volleyball and Foursquare had WAY too much tequila one night.”
Once you play the game, you’ll be glad that bender happened! This growing sport is intense, competitive and, yes, trash-talking comes with the territory!
Basically, Spikeball is similar to volleyball, except that you bounce the ball off of the round net that sort of resembles a mini-trampoline on the ground.
Here are some rules about the game that was invented for beach fun but has spread to yards, parks, basketball courts, soccer fields and anywhere else you can set it up:
- Assemble the portable net.
- Divide into two teams of two.
- Teams start on opposite sides, with one team serving the ball off the net.
- The receiving team has three hits to return the ball off of the net. Unlike volleyball, players can move completely around the net to pass to a teammate or spike the ball.
- You lose a point if you hit the ball off of the rim of the net (“rimmer”) or if you screen somebody from being able to make a return (“hinder”). Otherwise, you gain a point if you hit it off of the net and your opponent is unable to return it after three hits.
- First team to 21 wins, but you must be ahead by two points.
As our friends at UrbanDaddy wrote, “A taut Hula Hoop-sized net is placed at ankle level between a pair of two-player teams.”
