If there’s one thing the Philadelphia Phillies have had a lot of over the years, it’s good nicknames.
Right, Mitch Williams?
(That’s the Wild Thing’s real name, by the way.)
The Phillies have had everything from The Flyin’ Hawaiian (Shane Victorino) to Hollywood (Cole Hamels).
They’ve had some animals: Mad Dog, The Octopus and The Bull. (Human names: Ryan Madson, Antonio Alfonseca and Greg Luzinski.)
Remember Dutch, Charlie Hustle and Puddin’ Head? (Also known as Darrren Daulton, Pete Rose and Willie Jones.)
Or how ’bout The Flyin’ Hawaiian, Gnat and Shake ‘n Bake? (Sometimes referred to as Shane Victorino, Larry Bowa and Bake McBride.)
And don’t forget Lefty, The Bat, Sarge, Whitey, The Secretary of Defense and everybody’s favorite relative, Uncle Milty.
Because SV Sports is a family store, we won’t write down some of the nicknames you might have had for a few Phillies over the years!
By the way, if Tug McGraw was called Tugger, shouldn’t his son Tim be Timmer?
Now that you’ve had a fun stroll through memory lane — and you’re reminiscing about Schmitty and Krukker — go vote for the Phillies All-Nickname Team at Philly.com.
But, first, tell us in the comments what your all-time favorite nickname is.
Sorry, Phillie Phanatic, no voting for yourself!
