We’ve all been there. Our marriage often takes a hit when things get busy between work, kids and other responsibilities.
Other than wrapping up in a Minky and watching a movie, what are some ways to rekindle that fire with your spouse? Here are some great ideas to get you started.
Set a regular date night and stick to it
Budget and time constraints often make it difficult to venture out on the town on a regular basis, but even if it means renting a movie and eating microwave popcorn after the kids are in bed, take the time to be together. Spread a blanket in the backyard and stargaze, play a board game, cook a yummy meal or read a book together. Spending time together doesn’t have to be expensive.
Team up
Projects around the house have a way of piling up. While it sometimes seems more efficient to divide and conquer, working on projects together builds friendship and trust. Find out what your spouse has on his or her to-do list and offer to help complete the task.
Go mobile
Make an effort to send texts or e-mails to each other throughout the day. Little messages to check in show that you are thinking of your spouse and that you look to him or her as a trusted partner whose opinion you esteem.
Kiss and hug and maybe dance
My young daughter will often request that my husband and I dance when he walks in the door from work. We aren’t professional ballroom dancers by any means. We are barefoot living room dancers who trip and step on toes. But, we laugh. And for one moment out of our hectic day we are in each others’ arms. Even a five-year-old can recognize the goodness of that.
Give unexpectedly
Pick up his or her favorite candy bar on your way through the checkout line at the grocery store, download a newly released song from a favorite artist or wash his or her car. Small acts of kindness definitely foster a tighter bond.
