So, you’d like to add a punch of color to your space, eh? Well, allow us to give you a couple tips on doing it just right.
First, use the 60-30-10 rule. This simply means that 60 percent of your room should be a dominant color, 30 percent should be a secondary color, and 10 percent should be your accent color.
So, how does this translate into an actual room?
It typically means that 60 percent of a room’s color comes from the wall paint, 30 percent comes from upholstery, and 10 percent remains for a piece of art or a floral arrangement.
Oh, and don’t forget to add a little black (this color isn’t included in the percentages). “This is an old adage in interior design,” HGTV.com writes. “By adding a black element — say, a black box, lampshade, picture frame or other accent — you clarify and enhance all the other colors in the space. Try it — it really works!”
Another pointer: Color schemes work great when they are based on the natural world. HGTV recommends choosing darker values of color for the floor, medium colors for the walls, and light colors for the ceiling. This setup is pleasing to the eye and replicates nature. (The ground is dark, the trees and mountains are medium, and the sky is light).
