OUR VENUE: 8 things people don’t know about Jackson Hole

Although economics will be the focal point of the upcoming Rocky Mountain Economic Summit, we’d like to take a few casual moments to talk about the venue: Jackson Hole, Wyo.

We could go on and on about the scenery — the Grand Tetons are picturesque this time of year — but that’s something you can observe for yourself during our upcoming Rocky Mountain Economic Summit. Instead, we would like to share some lesser-known details about a place that ranks among the nation’s top outdoor destinations.

Here are 8 secrets about Jackson Hole:

  1. It’s the place where John Wayne rode his first horse. The year was 1932. John Wayne was in Jackson Hole for the filming of “The Big Trail,” where he received his first cinematic speaking part.
  2. You’ve heard of Old Faithful. But did you know there are approximately 10,000 active thermal features in nearby Yellowstone National Park. But none are quite as predictable as Old Faithful, which erupts every 77 minutes.
  3. If you take a ride up the Après Vous chair lift, you’ll notice something artistically peculiar when you reach the top. Looking down at the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, you will see a series of cross-country skiing trails that resemble Wyoming’s Bucking Bronco.
  4. Speaking of resorts, the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort has the longest continuous vertical rise of any ski area in the United States. The distance: 4,139 feet from the mountain peak to the valley floor!
  5.  Ghost hunters rank The Wort Hotel as a destination for unexplained phenomena. The hotel is reportedly haunted by a now-deceased maintenance worker named Bob, who opens doors and creates breezes to notify the staff about things that need fixing.
  6. More than 15 feature films have been made on location in Jackson Hole including “Shane,” “Spencer’s Mountain,” “Any Which Way You Can” and “Rocky IV.”
  7. When the U.S. Voyager II spacecraft was launched in 1977 to explore unknown reaches of the solar system, there was an Ansel Adams photograph of Jackson Hole as part of its artifacts cargo.
  8. One of the nation’s top economic summits is based out of Jackson Hole each year, attracting major news outlets such as Bloomberg, CNBC, Forbes and Reuters, along with distinguished speakers such as Federal Reserve presidents James Bullard and Charles Plosser. The event: The Rocky Mountain Economic Summit, of course.
