In the game of keeping your kids busy, electronics and learning apps are a great choice. However, every now and then an old-fashioned activity is needed. What better pastime than coloring with crayons?
And here’s an even better idea that’s sure to encourage the kids to unplug for a bit — tell them it’s time to make their own crayons. Homemade crayons allow your kids to create new colors and shapes, and the best part is it’s a snap.
First, create or purchase molds. Cupcake or other baking tins work great. Crayon companies also make custom molds (such as dinosaur or animal shapes). Next, have your kids help tear the paper off of old, broken crayons and place pieces into molds in whatever pattern you desire. Create tie-dye crayons, or combine similar colors for a one-of-a-kind hue.
Just be sure not to fill the molds too full because the crayons will expand while melting. Place your molds in the oven at 250 degrees for 10 minutes or until the crayons are thoroughly melted. Let cool then remove the new crayons from the molds.
These steps can be repeated to make even more crayon combinations. Making your own crayons is a great way to spend some quality time together on a rainy day or anytime you feel like unplugging. Have fun!
