Netflix users will all agree that one appeal of the service is the access it gives to an abundance of movies and TV shows at the click of a button. And now, Netflix has launched an initiative to offer more options for children, as well as the inner child in all of us grown-ups, with its entirely kid-friendly “Just for Kids” section.
Since first opening in 1999, the company has had an extensive “Family” section where users can choose from various G and PG-rated films. In this broad category, many parents still choose to block certain programs to ensure that their little ones can’t gain access to programs intended to be viewed with a grown-up. However, in early 2012 the company launched this new, fully appropriate section to help eliminate the need for filtering programs. Now available to all subscribers (users were given access to the section a little at a time as it was being instated), Netflix for kids is a great alternative to TV or movie rentals.
Wondering how it works? Here’s the scoop. Instead of opening the general Netflix screen that lists all the options available through the service, users click on the “Just for Kids” section and will see a screen that only lists the kid-friendly options. This eliminates any accidental viewings of PG through R-rated options and keeps kids browsing only the content that’s deemed appropriate for them. The site even features large cartoon character icons to click on instead of small images and lengthy descriptions, so children who can’t read can choose shows based on the characters.
Much of this content is also available in the “regular” Netflix options, which can be viewed by children with parental approval.
