Trends: The spam effect on business email

If there’s one thing we can’t do without in business, it’s email. Unfortunately, our inboxes are bombarded day after day by emails that are doing nothing more than bogging down our bandwidth.

Any guesses how much spam the average email account receives every day? As a percentage of total emails, the number is staggering.

During December —the latest month of data — an estimated 66 percent of emails worldwide were spam. That’s up from 63 percent in November and down from 68 percent in October, according to security watchdog SecureList.

So where is it all coming from? The world’s biggest spammer continues to be China, which was responsible for a third (34.3%) of all emails sent out in December. The next in line? It’s the United States. The U.S. sent out 15.7 percent of all spam worldwide, followed by Indonesia (14.6%) and India (5.6%).

Imagine how much more smoothly our systems would run without that one bit of grit: Spam.
