It’s the greatest wish parents harbor for their children, and the one thing, above all else, most moms and dads hope their kids are able to find: Happiness. But is happiness based on more than luck, circumstance and whimsy? Turns out, there’s science behind it.
Here are some research-based tips for raising happy kids.
Joke around with them! Laughing with your little ones helps set them up for social success. “When parents joke and pretend, it gives young kids the tools to think creatively, make friends and manage stress,” says LiveScience.com. “So feel free to play court jester — your kids will thank you later.”
Foster self-compassion. Go easy on yourself, and avoid parental guilt! Your kids will see you forgiving yourself, and — thanks to your example — they’ll be less likely to mentally beat themselves up as they grow and mature. What a great gift to give your kid!
Nurture your marriage or partnership. If you’re a parent with a “significant other,” don’t let the relationship fall by the wayside when the baby is born or when the stresses of life mount. Studies found that troubled marriages can cause sleep problems in children as young as 18 months. So, make sure to treat your marriage right.
