When it comes to learning, nothing compares to the toddler years. Children are so receptive at that age to the world around them. Take advantage of this precious window of aha moments in your child’s life by jump-starting his or her education. Here are some tips:
- Read to your child from books with large words and extremely clear pictures. This will help your child grasp exactly what they’re seeing. Avoid books with small type and complicated pictures.
- Think about teaching your toddler a foreign language. Just because you’re not fluent in French or Mandarin, doesn’t mean your little one can’t be! Buy foreign-language videos and CDs. Your child will never again be able to learn a language as easily as they will during their toddler years.
- Buy colorful letters and start spelling with your child. Popular options are fridge magnets and waterproof bathtub letters. This will help your child start to understand the connection between spoken and written language.
- Use lots of repetition. If — during your nightly reading sessions — your child wants to hear the same ‘ol story again and again, indulge him or her. It might be boring for parents, but this is how children process information.
