Text message marketing strategies

With the constant evolution of new media and new media advertising, we’re constantly seeing trends change and new marketing options emerge as a result of our society’s reliance on technology. Brands are fully aware that we’re glued to our devices, both mobile and stationary, and are always evaluating how best to tap into the spaces where we’re already thriving.

Just about every major brand has stepped up to the plate in regards to a social media strategy, but we’re just seeing hints at the adoption of text message marketing plans and tactics. If your not sure your brand feels the SMS space fits into your marketing goals, here are some statistics that might sway you.

  • An average individual receives over 1,200 emails a month and only receives 178 text messages a month.
  • An average individual only opens about 22% of the email that comes into their inbox while they open over 98% of the text messages they receive.
  • An average individual considers about 90% of their email spam, while they consider only about 1% of their text messages that way.
  • Only about 34% of all people can send or receive an email on their mobile device while 72% of them can send and receive text messages.

Between 2007 and 2011 the number of text messages sent quadrupled and in 2012 there were 200,000 text messages sent every second. Out of all text messagers surveyed, 81% claimed to use text messaging for business communications.

If the statistics that state users typically check their phone an average of 150 times a day are correct, why not consider reaching into that space to make use of that constant connection? Optimize it.
