When you see it on a map, Utah may not seem to have a lot going for it. Landlocked somewhere in the middle-ish of the United States, its square borders may not seem very inviting. But it’s what you can’t see on a map that brings tourists to Utah in droves.
And why do most of those tourists come? Well, there are a lot of reasons ranging from business conventions to visits with dear Aunt Annie. But no matter what gets people to Utah in the first place, there’s something no tourist can deny—the scenery is unbeatable. And many other tourists will tell you that it’s just as much fun to play in as it is to look at.
A visit to northern or central Utah will put you face to face with majestic mountain ranges. If you come in the winter, you’ll quickly discover that “there’s snow in them thar hills.” But not just any snow—the greatest snow on earth. Don’t believe us? It must be true, otherwise we couldn’t have said so on our license plates.
And whether you fancy downhill skiing or boarding at one of the 14 local resorts, snow shoeing, cross country skiing, sledding, or just building a snowman, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the precious powder.
In the summertime, those same mountains are transformed into the perfect venues for hiking, mountain biking, fishing, horseback riding, photography, or just enjoying the scenery. If you’re looking for trails, the ski resorts typically offer great ones that can be used for hiking and biking.
But don’t think central and northern Utah are hogging all the fun. Southern Utah is just as beautiful. While it doesn’t have the snow in the winter, it does have beautiful weather year-round, and some of the most picturesque red-rock scenery imaginable. You can hike, bike, or Jeep your way through this countryside and never get tired of seeing red. Best of all, it’s only a short drive from central Utah, so you can even enjoy the sun and the snow on the same vacation.
